This year's program will be very special in that Prof. Abbas M. Ahuwan will be returning to the USA from Nigeria to lead the workshop along with Frank.
Explore the concepts and techniques underlying the construction and decoration of Nigerian pottery. Experience the actual forming of pots and drums by traditional hand building methods. African tribal design motifs and symbolism are discussed and utilized as surface decoration. Each participant completes several pots or UDU drums during this trans-cultural experience. The final day culminates in an outdoor primitive type firing, potluck meal, and musical drum jam session around an open fire in the evening. Each student should finish the workshop with several completed udu drums.

SATURDAY, JULY 6
10 AM
- Orientation
- Slide presentation
- Search and gathering of traditional tools
- Demonstration and hands-on construction of pots and drums.
*Picnic lunch (bring food & drink or deli is nearby)
5 PM
Finish handwork for the day.
7-10 PM
Dinner (optional) and musical event nearby at Ruby’s Restaurant |
SUNDAY, JULY 7
| 10 AM-5 PM Continue work on pots and drums, picnic lunch same as Sat. |
MONDAY, JULY 8
| *This is a bonus day to finish up the last touches on your drums, if needed. |
SATURDAY, JULY 13
10 AM Outdoor primitive pit type firing and finishing pots and drums
5 PM Pot Luck dinner
Dusk Bonfire and drum music jam session |
NO PREVIOUS CLAY EXPERIENCE REQUIRED -- ALL LEVELS WELCOME
All clay and tools provided, but bring along your clay kit if you have one. Wear casual clothes; bring food, swimsuit, and towel. Local lodging or limited camping is available.
COST: $400.00 - includes Tuition, Materials, and Firing ($50.00 deposit required)
